Introduction to Our Modules

Lean manufacturing is a production approach that focuses on reducing time within the production system as well as time between suppliers and customers. The application of Lean practises, ideas, and tools to the creation and manufacture of physical items is referred to as Lean manufacturing. In a fast-paced, dynamic, and ever-changing global environment, many businesses are employing Lean manufacturing concepts to remove waste, improve processes, save costs, promote innovation, and reduce time to market.  Many lean tools have been introduced. Each of these tools has its own set of advantages, but the management style they were striving for is now often known as Lean.

Example of lean manufacturing tools can be used in productions such as;

  • 5S (a workplace organization methodology)
  • Kanban boards (visualizes workflow)
  • SMED (single minute exchange of die, which is a fast way to move from one manufacturing process to another)
  • Total productive maintenance (improves integrity and quality of manufacturing process)
  • Kanban boards (visualizes workflow)
  • Value stream mapping (A value stream map allows managers to visualize each step of the manufacturing process to identify process improvement opportunities)
  • Single-point scheduling
  • Multi-process handling
  • Poka-yoke (error-proofing)
  • Rank order clustering (production flow analysis)
  • Redesigning working cells
  • Control charts (for checking workloads)
  • Just-in-time

Lean manufacturing is well-known in industry, particularly in large enterprises (LE). However, in order to compete in the present market, small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) must implement lean manufacturing in order to expand and raise their production in terms of quality, productivity, and etc. A SME business should implement at least one simple lean tool, for example 5S at their workplace. However, there are challenges to implement lean in SME such as lack of leadership and management, financial capabilities, organizational culture, and skill and expertise.
